Obituary of Nicholas Smith

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved Dad/Grandad, Nicholas Smith, age 97, who peacefully left us on January 28, 2025.

Born December 17, 1927, in Manhatten, New York, Nicholas was a devoted father, grandfather, and friend.

His dedication to his family was immeasurable, and his memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.

He served in the Army Air Corps during WWII and worked construction before joining NYC public schools as a teacher and later Assistant Principal, eventually retiring after he was diagnosed with colon cancer over 30 years ago.

Nick enjoyed cooking, reading, music, playing Rummikub (lots of Rummikub), and spending time and traveling with his family and friends. Cruising was his most enjoyable form of travel, and he sailed over 40 times with his wife Ann all over the world. He enjoyed watching all college football, but particularly loved his Army, Navy, and Notre Dame teams, and he was a diehard fan of the Jets and the Mets. At the age of 90, he started bowling every Friday with his son and a small group of seniors at Herrill Lanes in NHP, but COVID unfortunately removed that social activity from his life. He will be dearly missed.

Nick lived a long and happy life and has now joined his predeceased first wife, Beulah; his two daughters, Elizabeth and Karen; and his second wife, Elizabeth Ann, in heaven.

He is survived by his stepson, Karl (Donna) Nystrom, and his grandsons, Michael (Nida) Nystrom and Kevin Nystrom.

You will forever be in our hearts. Rest in peace, Dad/Grandad.
