Obituary of Louise Frances Scanlon
Louise passed away peacefully after a brief and sudden illness on March 18, 2025. Louise was raised in Highland Falls, NY by her parents Charles and Pearl Christolon. She attended Albany State Teacher’s College and graduated in 1957. She was a beloved Mathematics teacher at Valley Stream North High School for her entire teaching career, which spanned over 50 years. She married Donald Scanlon on July 4, 1963, with a wedding reception held at the Hotel Thayer on the grounds of the United States Military Academy, where her father was an artillery instructor. Donald and Louise settled in Garden City, NY where they raised their daughter Jennifer. Donald predeceased Louise in 2013, and she continued to live in their home and took great pride in maintaining the home and working in the garden. She cherished her neighbors, colleagues and former students and was a friend and mentor to many. She enjoyed spending time at the Garden City Senior Center and joining in activities at her long-time parish, The Church of Saint Anne. She received great joy from her affiliation with the Valley Stream North Spartan Club, which continued after her retirement in 2012. Louise loved dogs, the Mets, getting a good bargain at the grocery store, and country music before everybody else did. She is survived by her daughter Jennifer McGucken (Charlie), her grandchildren Kelly McGucken and Patrick McGucken, her siblings Rosemary Soupiset, Charles Christolon, Babette Oldenburg, Warren Christolon, and Suzanne Klutman, and many nieces and nephews (their “Aunt Snooky”).
Louise will be greatly missed by her family, friends, neighbors and former students, and her memory will forever live on in Room 119. Donations in her memory may be made to The Andy Foundation, The North Shore Animal League, The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, or a charity of your choice.
