Obituary for Dr. Roger Mathew, M.D.

With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Dr. Roger Mathew, M.D., age 72, of Brooklyn, NY, who entered eternal rest on September 16, 2025.

Roger was born on June 14, 1953, in Valanjavattom, Kerala, to the late Mr. Puthenpurayil Varkey Mathai and the late Mrs. Annamma Mathai. After completing his high school education, he immigrated to the United States in 1970 to pursue college and medical studies. In 1986, he married Thresiamma Thomas, daughter of the late Mr. A.T. Thomas and Mrs. Thresiamma Thomas of Olakkappadil House, Edathua, Kerala.

Affectionately known as Kunju to his family, relatives, and neighbors, Roger built a distinguished career as a psychiatrist, serving his patients with compassion, patience, and dedication. In 2023, he retired from Creedmoor Psychiatric Center after many years of devoted service.

Roger will be remembered for his unwavering devotion to family, his steadfast commitment to his profession, his love of history and trivia, his joy in social gatherings, and his deep bond with extended family. He will also be cherished for his calm, gentle nature and his enduring faith. A devout Christian, he was a faithful member of St. George Orthodox Church, Staten Island.

He is survived by his loving wife, Thresiamma Mathew; his children Terry, Raj, and Varkey Mathew; his son-in-law Bejoe Varughese; and his beloved grandchildren Nathan and Zoe Varughese. He is also survived by his sister, Mrs. Omana Jacob Mavelil (Ranny, Kerala).

Roger was preceded in death by his brother Dr. Varghese P. Mathew, his sister Mrs. Mary Abi Cheeran, and his parents.
