Obituary of Rajagopalan Menon
In Loving Memory of Rajan Menon
July 23, 1942 - November 9, 2025
It is with immense sadness that we share the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather - Rajan Menon.
Mr. Rajan Menon was born on July 23rd, 1942, in South Vellarapilly, Aluva, Kerala to Sankara and Lakshmykuttyamma Menon. An explorer from a young age, he would go on long walks with no destination in mind, just letting the world show him what it had to offer. After completing his studies in Kerala, he later moved to Bombay and fell in love with life in a major city. Rajan always believed in networking and being active in the Malayalee community, even prior to getting into the business world, his friends knew him as ANR – Menon.
During his time in Bombay, Rajan was love struck when he met his future better half, Sara Blayil Uthuppan. In 1972, Sara took an opportunity to work as a nurse in New York. Unwilling to let love slip away and always ready for another opportunity for adventure, Rajan soon followed in January of 1973. Rajan and Sara were married on March 8th, 1973. They are blessed with two children, Smrithi (Simmy) and Santosh.
Recognizing his love of exploration, travel and experiences, Rajan Menon started his own travel agency with Mr. John Anglimootil in 1978 – naming it Com-For Travel on Woodside Avenue in Elmhurst, New York. Armed with an infectious smile, a firm handshake and sheer determination, he built a successful business out of nothing. He continued the business until 2008, after which Rajan joined a real estate business on Hillside Avenue in Queens.
Staying active in the Malayalee community in New York, he assisted in the foundation of the Kerala Center in Elmont, New York. Rajan enjoyed a profound love for knowledge, art and literature, he authored his own award-winning literary work in Malayalam “Manisha”.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sara; their daughter, Simmy, her husband Rodney and their son Gavin; their son Santosh, his wife Sayjal and their children Sajan and Sanaya. He is also survived by his sister, Rajalakshmy.
He is predeceased by his siblings Saradamma, Rathnamma, Sankarankutty, Radha, Chandrachoodan, Vijayalakshmy and Rajalakshm.
