Obituary of Vaylumkarothu Samuel Mathai
Vaylumkarothu Samuel Mathai, affectionately known to all as "Babu," was called home to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on January 26, 2026. He passed peacefully, surrounded by the family that was the center of his world.
Born in Konni, Kerala, India, to the late Samuel Vaylumkarote Maman and Pennamma Samuel, Babu grew up as one of five siblings. A man of discipline and courage, he dedicated 14 years to the Indian military. It was there he earned the nickname "Captain"—a title that would follow him for the rest of his life, perfectly capturing his natural leadership and protective spirit.
In 1975, he began a beautiful 51-year journey of marriage with his beloved wife, Ponnamma. In 1986, they embarked on a new chapter, moving their children, Boby and Juby, to Brooklyn, New York, to build a future rooted in opportunity and faith. Babu spent 25 years as a dedicated public servant with the New York City Transit Authority, eventually settling in the family home in Glen Oaks, where he remained a pillar of the community for four decades.
Beyond his career, Babu’s true legacy was his unwavering kindness. Whether through his service to the church or his eagerness to help a neighbor, he lived his faith through his actions. He was a man of strength, hard work, and deep devotion.
Babu is survived by his loving wife Ponnamma, son Boby and wife Sterie, daughter Juby, and grandchildren Isaiah and Jordan.
Papa, we will miss you dearly. Thank you for being the Captain of our family. Our comfort is knowing that you are no longer in pain and have run the race and finished well. As difficult as is for many who have come to know our Papa and loved him, we are eternally grateful for the time we had with him on this side of Heaven. Love you always and forever our beloved Papa.
