Maria Luisa Pantoja Obituary

Maria Luisa Pantoja Sanchez—an enterprising educator in Colombia and a deeply nurturing mother in the United States—passed away on March 16, 2026.

In the 1970s, as a high school social studies teacher in her native Bogotá, Maria Luisa was more than respected—she was adored. She had that rare gift: the kind of presence that made students lean in, listen closer, and feel seen. But life, as it often does, had an even bigger love story waiting for her.

When she met her future husband, Manuel Pantoja, everything shifted. Together, they stepped into a romance worthy of the telenovelas she would later adore so much—full of love, risk, and destiny. By the late ‘70s, they took their biggest leap yet, immigrating to Queens, New York, in pursuit of the American Dream.

And they didn’t just chase it—they caught it. Side by side, Maria Luisa and Manuel built a life from the ground up: a Colombian restaurant that eventually turned Italian (because why not?), a gas station, and even a taxi medallion. Through it all, Maria Luisa became the heartbeat of the home, pouring her energy into raising her children with love, discipline, and pride.

A true Gemini in every sense, she was the life of every room she walked into. She talked, she danced, she laughed—loud and joyfully—her energy big enough to echo all the way to the Cerro de Monserrate. She loved getting her hair done, settling in for her favorite novelas, and, most of all, being surrounded by her granddaughters.

Yes, through hard work and grit, Maria Luisa achieved the traditional markers of the American Dream—even owning two homes at one point. But if you asked her, her greatest success wasn’t anything you could buy or build.

It was her children.

She is survived by her children—Diana, Yvette, Chris, Luisnel, and Stephen—her beloved grandchildren, Selena and Kahlia; her siblings, Ricardo and Inés; her sons-in-law, Charles and Jesús; and her daughter-in-law, Nicole.
