When I started talking to his daughter Gabrielle, she would tell me all about her father. How he was a mechanic, built custom bikes, muscle cars and was a drag racer. I can remember one day I get a text from her saying my dad told me to send you this . I look at the message and it’s a picture of dyno sheets ( dinosaur bed sheets )I started laughing. Little did I know he would become one of the most important people in my life. I remember the 1st day I met Rob. I walked with his daughter to the garage and all i can remember was being nervous. He was out back sitting in his chair working on his motorcycle. I reached out my hand and shook his, and then he began to tell me about D.O.T . Eventually I ended up getting my start date at the job and on my 1st day he walks into the office and says “ what’s up slick ! they treating you right here ?” I felt relived becasue I knew someone in my new job. I remember sneaking away from my bay to go hang out with him next door and constantly getting told to stop going over there but I didn’t care, my friend was over there.
Over the next 4 years i shared countless memories with Rob, like fixing the ujoints in my truck in the freezing cold, or the time he help show me how to do valve adjustments on his Pontiac so I can pass my test for the city. But the thing that sticks in my brain is the day we went to trainland. We were like 2 kids in a candy store and it was something we both enjoyed. Spent all of 3 hours in the place and he damn near cleaned out the store. And that was the thing about him he had to do it right and with the best stuff available.
I miss our talks, the hour long conversations that just never ended. The time where he told me to pull all the stuff out of my car and smack a pushrod engine and carb and just go, the times he’s told me to get rid of my truck and get a new one. The amount of things I have learned from him and the things I’ve experienced with him. He shared his life, knowledge, and wisdom with me as well as he has shared his family and friends with arms wide open.
I’ll see you later dad, hope you got some more story’s for me when we meet again
I love you

I met Rob on my first day at DOT. After we made introductions he said to me, “the hardest part about this job is getting here on time every day. Never, ever be late especially while you’re on probation. The second hardest part is what’s for lunch”. I knew right there we were going to get along famously.
For the better part of the next decade, we worked together, 6 days a week shoulder to shoulder or as he would say “asses and elbows”. Together with Ronnie, we grew closer and became like family. There was nothing he wouldn’t do for me and I felt the same way towards him. A man like Rob comes along once in a lifetime as a friend and I’m a better man having known him. I can remember Jen asking us if we were unknowingly separated at birth.
May he rest in peace and until we meet again I’ll close with these words I know he would love…
DEAR LORD, WE GIVE YOU ROB. TRY NOT TO PISS HIM OFF. AMEN.
I love you brother and I hope I did right by you.
