Cindy, my friend since schoolCindy and I became friends at the age of 15 when we found ourselves in the same Maths class at Bishop Luffa school. We grew up half a mile from each other in the village of Bosham. In the earlier years of our friendship we would often take our bikes down to the Anchor Bleu in Old Bosham for a beer or two.Cindy had a great thirst for education, travel, exploring other cultures and people in general. We did not live in each others pockets, but whenever we spoke it was as if we had seen each other the previous day and were continuing a conversation; she was always approachable and friendly, a lovely person.I have so many memories of her, including weddings, friends and families, it is difficult to isolate some, but there are two that stick with me in particular:When Marcia and I lived 50 miles north of York in Yarm, we would often visit Cindy and Edward on a Saturday. We spent many really pleasant evenings playing cards, eating Betty’s cake, drinking coffee and talking. My last memory of Cindy was just a few weeks ago when we visited for the weekend. Cindy and I spend 10 minutes talking and holding hands – we both knew it was our final time together. I am so grateful that I had this opportunity to say goodbye.

Returned missionaries are, in my experience, almost universally not good at translating on the fly. It’s just too hard. Like you mentioned, the speaker will continue to talk while the translator is reciting the translation. Good translators seem to be able to handle that, at least to some extent — I have no idea how. Returned missionaries generally can’t. The only ones I’ve seen who can have had years after their missions of speaking their mission language. E.g. they married one who natively speaks their mission language and speak it at home, or they have been living in their non-native country for a long while, like a Japanese person living in the U.S. (Though even these qualifications don’t on their own mean a person will be a good translator.)I attend a Japanese ward in the U.S., while I don’t speak Japanese, so I get to listen to translators every week. It is important for the speaker to provide a copy of their talk, if possible. I gave a talk that wasn’t quite finished, and after I started winging my conclusion I looked over at the translators, who looked confused and were scrambling. ;) Another recommendation is to have two translators. They can spell each other by alternating speakers, and the non-active translator is free to look up scripture quotes quickly for the active one.I’ve also noticed that jokes don’t translate. Either the joke ends up being one of the bits that aren’t translated (it’s really hard to translate everything), or the joke is too difficult to translate, or the joke just doesn’t translate into a different language. And it makes me sad when everyone else is laughing but I don’t know why. :POur ward is blessed with a small number of great translators, and some more good ones. It really is an amazing and impressive skill.

Back to Pompeii and Vesuvius. From the parking area/refreshment establishments level we walked with our local guide and the tour bus guides, listening to his excellent explanations of what was seen. We passed the edge of the escarpment overlooking the Bay of Naples on which Pompeii is built, its geologic layers exposed, most having issued forth from Vesuvius over the eons. Those who settled on it had no idea of the connection to a volcano, for there was no recorded history of it being anything other than a lovely mountain with incredibly fertile soil on it and surrounding it for miles. A fresco rescued from one of the buried houses and preserved in a museum depicts it before the fatal eruption–a magnificent Matterhorn-type single peak covered in greenery.Ascending the stairs having several flights and landings brought us to the top and gave a panoramic view of the Bay of Naples and surrounding Campania’s landscape. Naples and Campania had a long tradition of Greek colonial settlement before Rome gained its prominence. The area was rich in agriculture, particularly grapes and olive trees, staples of Mediterranean trade in olive oil and wine. The ports were excellent places to do business, and cities on the bay prospered. Pompeii is believed to have a population of about 20,000 in AD 79.A large earthquake in AD 62 significantly damaged Pompeii, and reconstruction was still going on in 79. No connection was made between the quake and the subsequent eruption even as the city sat atop the evidence. Vesuvius had been asleep for millenia. Long sleep seems to be its wont, as its next awakening was 1944–and that was nothing much compared to 79. Some 3 million inhabitants of Naples and surrounding Campania today are at risk when it wakes again. Scary.Walking through the streets of Pompeii one must really look carefully before stepping, as the large cobblestones don’t have level surfaces nor are the bases they sit in level. The curbs on either side are higher than a contemporary curb, and the streets act as drainiage channels as well. At intervals there are stepping stones across the streets, spaced so that a cart or chariot’s wheels can pass between them without being stuck. Wheel ruts are deep in the stones in places. The streets are wide enough for vehicles to pass through one at a time with room on each side for loads, but that’s all. There are sidewalks of sorts in most places–or at least that’s what has survived.Next, finding Pompeii after the disaster.

Pompeii and Herculaneum lay buried and essentially lost for centuries until in 1738 workmen digging foundations for King Charles of Bourbon’s summer palace encountered more than the scattered fragments of antiquity that had popped up randomly in the interim. The king was intrigued, and the search was on. Investigating through underground passages, his searchers discovered the theater of Herculaneum. The treasures found grew with each cartload. By 1755 the significant differences in contemporary ground levels and discovery levels in the area was perplexing, and the question remained what was that place known in local folklore as “the city” on the small escarpment? Outlying remains nearby had been unearthed, and finally Pompeii was revealed as that place when an inscription was found.Pompeii then became the place to visit among everybody who was anybody with an interest in the classical world. The everybody part seems to be pretty much the same these days given the numerous tour buses parked below and tour guides shepherding their flocks throughout its streets and buildings. Unfortunately the weather was in the mid 80s and sunny, and hot in the sun even if wearing a hat on the day we were there. The guides suggested taking bottled water on the walking tour, and that was sound advice. Lots of walking up a slight grade to the different streets, down stairs, back up the stairs, on the flat, up another low hill, down to the amphitheater with its perfect acoustics. Through more narrow streets between what had been businesses–a laundry, a provisioner’s shop, a wine dealer’s storage area, down to some taverns/cafes scattered among them, with a brothel or four in the mix. One brothel had its “menu” carved on the wall by the front door, complete with prices. Graffiti is everywhere in town, now reduced to what was carved in the walls by passers by. But it was painted on decorated painted walls in the days em>before. Bragging gladiators, prostitutes and madams advertising, merchants advertiting, kids being snarky, street addresses, political campaigning, ramblings of drunks, pretty much anything and everything.Seemed as if the social level of such establishments’ patrons might dictate which neighborhoods they bordered, though by no means did the uppercrust folk stick to their own territory. The local tour guide told of a bizarre–to us–arrangement between the jug (amphora) maker, the taverns, and the laundry. When impelled by the call of nature, the men imbibing wine in the taverns would contribute to an amphora conveniently placed outside the door. Next morning slaves would take the jugs to the laundry and take empty ones back to the taverns. The laundry used two methods to clean clothes and linens–boiling them in water or soaking them in urine and then washing them. Do not try this at home. The city was much more than a resort retreat for some wealthy from elsewhere; it was a commerce center that made citizens wealthy and encouraged the arts in private and public buildings and temples. Regrettably, the early excavations exposed priceless paintings, frescoes, and mosaics to the elements, and those that were not removed to sheltered environs soon began deteriorating, cracking, fading, slowly falling apart. Modern excavations into untouched areas awed archaeologists with bright colors, home furnishings, daily living items found just as they were on that terrible day. These have been carefully removed and preserved in private collections and museums. All of the city within the walls has been identified and marked; a goodly portion excavated, mapped, and named; three areas are yet to be excavated. A large storage building at one side of the forum holds items retrieved and cataloged but yet to be examined closely. They are contained in multi-tiered shelves in row upon row, closed in on three sides by walls and open on the fourth but sheltered by a large overhang and closed in by locked chainlink fencing. They surely represent thousands of PhD theses in archaeology and history yet to be written. Few of the plaster casts of bodies of the victims remain on site, as they are too fragile and are soon moved to safer environs for examination. Much of the statuary remains in the public places such as the forum, most of it identified. It was exhausting and kind of mysterious in that the place seems quietly alive if you pay attention. Definitely an experience not to be missed, jet lag day 2 or not. And behind the city walls a few miles distant looms Vesuvius, now seemingly with two peaks and a depression between them, and we know roughly where the top went. We likely are standing on some of it.So it was off to lunch at a restaurant part way up the road on the side of the mountain. Pizza for everyone and wine. Pizza was not invented in Chicago–it was invented in Italy, and the folks in Naples will match theirs against anybody’s anywhere.Reference: Alex Butterworth and Ray Laurence, Pompeii, the Living City. New York: St. Martin’s Press, 2005. p. 3.

Nanette-Thanks for sharing the blog entry and photos of FLWright’s Florida Southern College buildings. It would be a shame for anyone who visits the Lakeland area to miss out on the opportunity to tour this unique collection of organic architecture. It looks like you really enjoyed your visit. Like your husband, I am an avid fan of architecture, and art as well. I am very excited about the pending expansion of the CMA, because of the added space it will offer the museum, and because the project has been designed by a world-class architectural firm. The results of this effort will give Central Ohio a significant piece of contemporary architecture, and will be something that the residents of our community can all enjoy and be proud of.That being said, is there any possibility that once the expansion project is complete that the museum might consider creating a gallery devoted to architecture, and/or to present exhibits, lectures, seminars, etc. devoted to architectural topics? I personally think that there is a glaring need for this type of programming in our area, and the CMA could help to fill that void. One only needs to look to Chicago and their magnificent AIC to see how popular and well-received such programs can be. While our own Wexner Center has from time-to-time presented architecturally-based exhibits and events, I feel there is a need for more and I’d like to see the CMA consider becoming involved.Sorry to be so long-winded here, but this is a topic that has been on my mind for some time, and your blog entry today provided an ideal jumping-off point for me. Thanks again, and I hope to hear back from you with your views on this subject.

/ I've noticed that in the rush to blame the Muslim students, none of the commenters seem to have actually read the article. This case was NOT brought by Muslim students; it was brought by an activist lawyer who is using the case as a platform to attack the Catholic Church. Prof. John Banzhaf first went after tobacco, and has spent years suing McDonald's and "Big Food" for not disclosing the "addictive" nature of their fatty foods, and for causing people to overeat and become obese. He was one of the stars of Supersize Me.This left-wing agitator hung out Muslim students as bait, and everybody here has swallowed the bait and poured their derision on Muslims, while Banzhaf skates along.Eyes on the ball, people. The enemy in this case is a lawyer who has engaged in a 50-year legal battle against personal responsibility and choice, while asserting the "public interest" in dictating what individuals and private institutions must or must not do.

/ Catholic University is "of, by, and for" Roman Catholics. It owes no Protestant, Jew, or Muslim any special considerations. What they do owe the people of those beliefs is an excellent education—NOTHING MORE! For Muslims to have complaints about violations of their human rights is disgusting. To group Islam as part of the great religions of the world fills me with revulsion. How can a "religionâ that advocates the murder of Jews, terrorist attacks in the name of their godless religion, and routinely turn a blind eye to the beating and even murder of young women whose only crime was to have been violated by Muslim men. Islam IS NOT A RELIGION it is nothing more than cult, and as such, should be ignored and repudiated. To see John Banzhaf's odious name at the center of this current attack against what is ultimately a matter of the property rights Catholic University seems totally apropos. Banzhaf's name was originally linked to the attack on big tobacco. The result of that attack was the banning of and smoking of, a completely legal substance–tobacco. More importantly, his attacks on tobacco were in fact, attacks on property rights, civil liberties, free enterprise, and even scientific integrity. He is truly a dangerous man who has no conscience when it comes to tearing asunder the very fabric of American society. Robert Hayes Halfpenny.

For example, my wife is a Christian and she has her portrait of Jesus and her crucifixes, and her little dolls and knick knacks. Occasionally she will pray to her god, and I will sometimes watch with some interest as she appears to have a conversation with herself. I don't go berserk and tell her to throw her things away, or stop chanting like a primitive superstition aborigine howling at the moon simply because I don't believe in her regilion. I watch with amusement and I tolerate it. I know perfectly well that her beliefs are absolutely irrational and silly, but I let her have her fun and believe she's really talking to someone. It doesn't harm me, so why not let her believe?Nobody owes a group of people special accommodation for their religious ceremonies. If one of the Muslims wants to decorate his private dorm like a mosque and invite other Muslims to come over and pray there 21 times per day, that's his right. But, if the Muslims go to a room where Christians hold their ceremonies, they have NO right to go berserk over the decorations they find. If the regilions were reversed, you and I know perfectly well that the Christians wouldn't be screaming their heads off over the decorations in the room provided for them. They might bring their own decorations with them when they came to pray and take them back out when they left. Nice, peaceful, tranquil. The unfortunate thing is that some regilions teach their people to be more vocal, and offended. Islam is one of those regilions. You might get a kick out of this too, but in their regilion they are specifically TOLD that lying is not only acceptable to people of other regilions, but is required. They use this to full advantage to make inroads into a culture where they don't already dominate in an effort to eventually dominate the culture over time. They are a patient people, but they want what they want, and they have every intention to take it, over time.I know I am not in a position to make policy in Catholic University, and I am sure those who are must be afraid for their very lives and safety. But at some point you have to stand your ground. Make a reasonable offer to the Muslims and if they don't accept it, don't cave. Just a few innocent inroads today can become a massive superhighway tomorrow. The madness HAS TO STOP somewhere. Besides that, why are Muslims Attending a university called Catholic University? Have you stopped to wonder about that? There is a strategy to what they are doing and they know it. They KNOW that America has a policy permitting freedom of regilion, and that some judges misinterpret it regularly to mean that accommodations MUST be made for any regilion that demands it. What the Constitution really means is that you can't prevent someone from practicing the regilion they choose to. It makes no mention of proving accommodations for everyone, nor should it. Some judges, unfortunately, just aren't too bright, else this lawsuit would be thrown out on its merits by now.Though I know my dream won't come true anytime soon, I hope that the day will come that every religious person thinks more deeply about their regilion, realizes it's all superstitious nonsense, and takes a step towards reality by becoming atheist. Atheist does NOT mean Satanist you know? I know regilions are ALL superstitious nonsense as I am a lifelong atheist who've lived with a devout catholic for 10 years now. I have what might be a pretty unique perspective on regilion after observing my wife's faith.
