Obituary of Sosamma Idiculla

Obit for Sosamma Cherian Idiculla

Park Funeral Chapels

Sosamma “Susan” Cherian was born on April 21, 1935 in Adoor, Pannivizha,

Vadakedathu Thottathil House, Kerala, India. After finishing her education and

obtaining a nursing degree, she worked in Calcutta as a registered nurse (R.N.)

eventually becoming head of Cardiac Nursing. While there, she was recruited to

work in a hospital in England in the early 1960’s. From England, Susan moved

again, to Canada before coming to the United States.

She was married on August 15, 1966 in Ridgefield Park, NJ to M.E. Idiculla, then

a Chemmachen (Deacon). She had a daughter Saji in 1968, then moved to

Geneseo, NY where she had a son Sebu in 1974. There, Achen (by now a

priest) and Kochamma (wife of a priest) raised their children while she worked as

an R.N. and he as a university professor. As a hands-on mom and working fulltime,

Kochamma’s responsibilities as an achen’s wife increased as he rose in the

Church hierarchy. She hosted Bava Thirumenis, numerous Thirumenis

(Bishops), and Achens and their families, as well as entertained countless

churches and organized innumerable charitable functions.

They retired to Florida in 2003 for a life of long walks and sunshine year-round!

In 2014 Achen passed away and Kochamma moved in with her daughter in

Sarasota, FL. To celebrate her 80th birthday, Sosamma Kochamma traveled to

Puerto Rico with her twin sister, children and grandchildren for some fun in the

sun. During the fall of 2017, she moved from Florida to New Jersey to be closer

to her son and his family. Spending time with her grandchildren and playing

bridge brought Kochamma the most joy in recent years.

Sosamma Kochamma is survived by her daughter Saji and husband Gerry; son

Sebu and wife Lori; grandchildren Samuel, Alicia and Samantha; sister Alamma

Thomas (Toronto, Canada), and brothers Vadakedathu Cherian Zachariah

(Boston, MA), Oommen Cherian (Edmonton, Canada), and V.C. Mathew (Adoor,

Kerala, India). Kochamma was pre-deceased by her husband of 48 years, The

Very Rev Dr M.E. Idiculla, Cor-Episcopa; her parents Mr. Cherian Oonnunni and

Mrs. Mariamma Cherian; and sisters Elizabeth Abraham, Chinnamma Varghese,

Marykutty Zachariah, and Annamma Varghese.
