I had the honor to work with Jay when I was working with the Semantics Team, he was the glue to the many people working with Semantics, be in the US or the Mexican center, Jay made sure everybody was engaged and having fun and feeling good about the work done. Jay really made a difference while focusing on performance and delivery he cared more about how people felt and made his best to have everybody onboard and happy. Jay will always be remembered. My condolences to his family.

Dear Nupur, Pia and Shayan, I too worked with Jay for many years. I've always appreciated his willingness to drop what he was doing to give a listening ear and lend a helping hand. It was inspiring to see his patience and cheerfulness no matter how he was feeling. You were clearly important to him and he was proud of you. If I stopped by his office to discuss something, he'd often ask about my family and he'd share a tidbit about some family trip or activity or your recent successes. I'll miss Jay. Please accept my deepest condolences. Bill

Souri Das posted a condolence

It was a typical New Hampshire winter morning in February, 1994 -- not snowing, but lots of snow on the ground. I was waiting nervously in the ZK01 lobby of Digital Equipment Corporation office in Nashua.
"Hello, Souripriya. I am Jayanta Banerjee."
That was the first time I met Jay. I had a phone interview with him a few days before that.
He took me down to a small conference room next to the hallway in ZK03 and talked with me for a few minutes. That conversation was so caring and reassuring that I no longer felt nervous. It gave me the confidence to answer any difficult or unfamiliar questions -- posed during rest of the interview sessions that day with veteran and brilliant DEC Rdb database people including Peter Spiro, T K Rengarajan, Rick Anderson, Ashok Joshi and Arun Gopalan -- grounded on my understanding of the fundamentals of computer science.
I was hired. I thought I was going to be here in this sleepy rural town of Nashua, NH for may be a year or two before heading back to the bustling cosmopolitan New York city area I was so used to as a graduate student.
Working under Jay was exciting. There was a lot of freedom in choosing what I wanted to work on. Work typically involved a lot of research, intense brainstorming, writing papers, filing patents and yes, productization of some of the ideas. Jay's ability to understand to the finest detail the technical merits of project proposals gave us the guidance we needed.
If I want to write all the memories I have of Jay, it will probably exceed the quota limit. Here are just a couple:
In April 2003, my colleague Eugene Chong and I went to Jay's office and showed him a small example of what can be done using RDF semantic graphs. We proposed that we start exploring graphs and consider providing graph support in Oracle. This was a time when, barring a few people actively involved in it like Tim Burners-Lee, R. V. Guha, et. al, nobody else knew about RDF. We were not sure if Jay would agree. Jay not only asked us to continue exploring, but also encouraged us to build prototypes and let other people join in our effort.
In summer 1996, we had a company picnic day at the Hampshire Dome in Milford, NH. A soccer game was organized in the afternoon and since playing soccer has always been my passion, I was enjoying every moment of the game. I was pleasantly surprised to see Jay joining us -- I did not know that managers and/or 40+ year olds would play soccer. We were on the same team and combined to score quite a few goals. Like me, he too was passionate about soccer.
It has been almost 24 years since that winter day in 1994. I never left Jay. How can you leave a manager who is so passionate about innovation, brave enough to let you do a project that seems outlandish at first, had a smile on his face even in trying circumstances?
I know you did not want to leave us, Jay. How we wish you did not have to leave us, but nature never cared about what we minions wished.

Jay Banerjee was my manager for most of my years at Oracle. He was the best kind of manager… hands off but available. He was always there if I needed anything. Despite his medical issues, Jay always smiled and always kept his positive attitude. He was an inspiration. My deepest condolences to Nupur, Pia and Shayan and all who mourn his passing.

You were a very big part of my life, you taught me so many things like a big brother, but more importantly you taught me the value of friendship, how to be patient and learn to balance my career and family. I looked up to you for advise and guidance, and you never failed in showing me the right path. Your positive attitude at everything around you was infectious, and made me feel happy even during my deepest sorrow.
I truly feel blessed to have had your affection and friendship, I miss you and will remember you for ever.
Love from your younger sister.

It was a privilege to work under Jay.
I enjoyed technical discussions, brainstorming ideas with him, and his keen sense of humor. So many of our patents were refined by his suggestions.
I was also touched by his kindness, thoughtfulness, and his energetic drive.
I will share one incident:
Jay and I had visited Washington D. C. for a customer meeting, and we were supposed to take early morning flight to Manchester. We reached the airport only to find that the flight was cancelled. I was in no particular hurry to get back and was willing to wait for next flight which would put us in Manchester late afternoon.
However, Jay wanted to get back, because his mother-in-law was leaving for India in the afternoon by an international flight from Boston, and he was supposed to drop her to the airport.
So he decided that we will rent a car and we will drive to Nashua. The drive from Washington D.C to Nashua was doable but I was not keen as I thought we would barely make it.
Yet, he insisted and so we started. Jay was in the driver's seat and I the reluctant passenger. He was driving well over speed limits and we were doing good time and then we decided to stop at a rest area on my insistence. I wanted to calm him down.
We resumed, and I was urging Jay to drive slowly. We must have driven for about fifteen minutes or so again over the speed limits when I mentioned to Jay that it feels like as if we are not making progress. The scenery looks familiar. He said what do you mean? I said I am afraid we are going in the wrong direction. What had happened was at the rest area when we resumed we exited incorrectly and starting driving in the reverse direction. As soon as we realized that we made a U-turn and continued but we had lost another precious half-an-hour.
To make matters worse, we hit traffic around NYC and things started getting further delayed. In between, her daughter kept calling asking when we will reach.
After we crossed NYC area, I reasoned that there is no way we can make it and we can as well take a break and inform his family. But then he decided that we will directly drive to the Boston airport and thus save time of going to Nashua and then heading to the airport. Accordingly he instructed his family and yes indeed with that change of the plan we drove directly to the airport and I also had the opportunity to meet his mother-in-law at the airport and see her off. Of course, Jay had a the biggest smile of his face telling me see I told you we will make it ...
Yes, Jay, you were a major part of my professional life, and I thank you for that.
I admire your zest for life, and you ability to fight back and despite illnesses, you barely missed office, and at the earliest opportunity you would be back to office as usual working, on phone attending meetings, and greeting us all with that gentle smile ...

Please accept my deepest condolences. I was so sad to hear that Jay passed away. He was my manager for almost 9 years, and it was such a privilege to have him as both a colleague and a friend. I have many fond memories of Jay, especially from the times I spent with him on trips for conferences and trainings. Jay was such a kind and sincere person. I will always remember how much he supported and trusted us as a team and gave us the freedom to try new things and innovate. He will truly be missed.

I want to express my deepest condolences to Jay's family and friends. I was a 24 year old kid when I joined DEC back in 1988. Within months of joining I was asked to interview Jay for a position as manager of the team (KODA) that I was working in. Jay must have been quite amused to be interviewed by such an inexperienced kid but he hid it well.
I am so glad he joined our team. I learned a lot reporting to Jay. I must say he is one of the best managers I've ever worked for. Over the years we kept in contact and I used to enjoy meeting him when ever he visited HQ or came for Oracle Openworld.
I look back very fondly on those years I worked in KODA with Jay and the rest of the KODA gang. We had a wonderful group dynamic and Jay enabled that.
He was a wonderful person am I'm glad to have know him.
