Obituary of Mary McMahon
Mary Mc Mahon (nee Markey), 93, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 17th, 2018. Loving wife of the late Martin McMahon. Sister of the late Bernard Markey. Beloved Mother of Martin (Lori), Brian (Mary), James (Kathy), Gerald (Debbie), Mary Ellen (Tim) Leviness, Barbara (Brad) Nichols and the late Charles and Infant John. Devoted Grandmother to Kelly, Shawn, Patti, Suzy, Danny, Jennifer, Joey, Kevin, Brittany, Brendan, Ryan, Erin, Jack, John & Sean. Loving Great-Grandmother of Thomas, Alice, Kyle, Fiona and Patrick, as well as many other family and friends.
Mary was born on October 16th, 1924 to the late Thomas & Ellen Markey in Anaconda, Montana. Unfortunately, she never met her father, who died in a tragic accident before she was born. She and her mother and late brother Bernard returned to Ireland when she was an infant and she was raised in Carrickmacross, County Monaghan Ireland. Mary had only wonderful memories of her childhood growing up in Ireland, which she referred to as “home” all her life. She met and married her late husband Martin at the young age of 19. They decided to immigrate to America, and that is where she would stay.
Mary was the most wonderful Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother, who was affectionately referred to as “Grandma Mac”. She was simply cherished by all of her family. After being widowed at the young age of 55, she played the role of both Mother and Father to us all. She comforted all of us in hard times, and while doing so, was the most happy and selfless person you would ever want to meet. She was a devout Catholic, whose faith got her through some very tough times in her life. She loved music, especially Irish music, and loved to sing. She loved to cook and was known for her incredible Pot Roast. Though having many wonderful qualities, her sense of humor stood out above all. She had the innate ability to always make you laugh, many times laughing at herself. To say that she will be missed is an understatement.
The visitation will be on Sunday June 24th, 2018 at the Park Funeral Chapel, Garden City Park, New York. 2pm-5pm and 7pm-9pm. The funeral Mass will be at Holy Spirit Church in New Hyde Park, N.Y. at 9:30 am Monday June 25th, 2018. The burial will be at the Cemetery of the Holy Rood, Westbury, New York.
