Obituary of Joseph Martin Lund

Joseph Martin Lund died peacefully at home Wednesday, January 8th, surrounded by loved ones and the animals he cherished. Big Joe, as he was known, was a lover of all things New York: Born in Manhattan, raised in the Bronx and residing in the same home in Flushing for the last 65 years, he was a lifelong fan of the Yankees and avid amateur photographer. Joe was often seen with his Nikon camera in hand photographing nature, animals and his family. He loved the City, but thought that New York State was the most beautiful in the country, and he had a very special fondness for Bear Mountain. He enlisted in the Army Air Force upon graduation from Manhattan High School of Aviation Trades, and was deployed to Tinian. True to his nature of loving all animals, Joe’s best friend was a 3 legged dog left behind by a Japanese marine. Once back in NYC, working in advertising sales for the New York Herald Tribune, he had a 5 minute encounter with Dorothy Shedlow. Later that day he told his friends he had just met his future wife. They were married for 64 years until her passing last year. Outgoing, kind and funny, he could always laugh at himself and never at anyone else’s expense. He is survived by his eldest daughter, Joanne Lund of Pipersville, PA, his daughter and son-in-law Dale and Dave Eyring of Flushing, NY and his beloved grandsons: Jonathan, Christopher and Zachary Jimenez of Pinellas Park, Fla, who are all comforted in knowing that Big Joe and Dot are together again.
