Obituary of Gilda & Vincent DeJoseph

Gilda DeJoseph (nee Carnevale), age 89, of New Hyde Park passed away peacefully on May, 27, 2021. Devoted wife of the late Vincent (Jimmy) with whom she shared 68 years of marriage. Loving mother of four children, Gloria (Tony) Tenaglia, Joan (Steve) DiLorenzo, Rosanne (Joe) Vogel, and Vincent (Donna). Proud Nonna to Cristina, Claudia, Adriana, Diana, Stephen, Joseph, Daniel, Julia, Vincent and Thomas and Bisnonna to 8 great grandchildren, Calina, Riley, Sean, Ellen, Fritz, Vincent, Michael and Luca. She is also survived by loving nieces and nephews. Gilda, daughter of Adelina and Tommaso Carnevale, was born in Altino in the province of Chieti in Abruzzo, Italy. She and her mother immigrated to the United States in 1949 to join her father and brothers who had settled in Wilmington, Delaware. Gilda learned English by attending evening classes at Wilmington High School and worked as a finisher at a sewing factory. She met her husband Jimmy in 1950. He had come to America from Selva, also in Abruzzo, Italy and they had mutual friends. They raised their family in Astoria, New York. Gilda was active in St. Francis of Assisi parish as a member of the Rosary Society and the Mothers Club of St. Francis as their children all attended the parish school. She loved to bake, cook, knit, sew and crochet. She and Jimmy moved to New Hyde Park in 1986 to be closer to their children. A highlight of her life was to have her children and grandchildren accompany her to attend a family wedding in Altino in 2009. Her family and friends will never forget the abundant Sunday Suppers and the annual Carnevale celebrations lovingly prepared at her home until she was diagnosed with dementia which clouded her last decade of life. Her role as a mother was precious to her as her family was her pride and joy. Gilda was the heart of the home and will be forever remembered. A mass will be held at Notre Dame R.C. Church at 9:15 am on Saturday, June 5, 2021.
