Obituary of Mark Edward Gamber

Mark Edward Gamber, of Garden City, New York, died on Saturday, July 31st, 2021. He is survived by his loving wife, Ellen, his adoring sons, Jack and Michael, his daughter-in-law, Alana, his brother, Robert, and sister-in-law Andrea, his mother and father-in-law, Francis and Frances Sweeney; sister-in-law Kathleen Sweeney, Maryanne (John) Reilly; Mary Patricia (Timothy) Brown, Barbara (Edward) Kneafsey, all of Garden City, NY; brother-in-law Michael (Colleen) Sweeney of Rockville Centre, NY; brother-in-law Luke Sweeney of Miller Place, NY; and brother-in-law Sean (Elizabeth) Sweeney of Washington, DC. He is preceded by his father, John Robert, his mother Dolores, his brother, John Michael, and sister-in-law Lorraine. Mark was an attorney and a businessman. He graduated from Baldwin High School before going on to Nassau Community College, John Jay College, and St. John’s University School of Law. Mark passed the bar exam and was admitted to the practice of law on May 1st, 1985. He met the love of his life, Ellen, in college, and they were married on May 29th, 1982. To his family, Mark was more. He was a baseball coach, a Scoutmaster, an expert fisherman, an enthusiastic chef, and a green-thumbed gardener. He ran multiple marathons, taught himself to speak German, and started his own business to put himself through law school. He was a law partner to Jack and tennis partner to Michael. He was a lover of Motown music, fishing, the outdoors, and he was unbelievably well read. He guided countless young men on their path to attaining the rank of Eagle Scout on Long Island. He served as President of the Chaminade Parents Club with Ellen. He had cherished friends from Baldwin to Munich. He loved his large extended family, especially his nineteen nieces and nephews; he was proud of them all and he delighted in their achievements. Mark was always willing to help; he never put himself first. He had a contagious smile, and was always ready with a story. He will be missed immensely. His legacy is the example he set for those around him: his bravery, his kindness, his advocacy for others, his intellect, his quiet strength. He wrote these values on the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to spend time with him. Donations may be made in Mark’s honor to the Chaminade High School Torch Fund or the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
