Obituary of Phyllis Zander

Phyllis (Tomassetti) Zander passed away peacefully in her bed at home on September 7, 2021, at the age of 81. She was born and raised in Flushing, Queens, New York, where she worked with her family at the Old Roma Restaurant, their successful, longstanding family-owned business. It was in Flushing where she also met the love of her life, Fred Zander, and they married in August 1968. In 1975, they moved to New Hyde Park, New York, raising their two children in the home and community where they enjoyed many memories. Upon retiring from managing and co-owning the restaurant after its closing in 1997, she turned to her other passions which included tending to her garden, bowling (often too competitively) with her niece, enjoying the beach and a nice steak dinner with Fred, watching her beloved New York Yankees, and most of all, spending time with her greatest joys – her three beautiful grandchildren. Beloved wife and widow of Frederick Zander, Jr. Loving mother of Karen Zander and Christopher (and wife Sandy) Zander. Proud grandmother of Garrett Zander, Delaney Zander and Zachary Zander. Cherished daughter of the late Candido Tomassetti and Gina (Calabrese) Tomassetti. Devoted sister and sister-in-law of Chester Tomassetti, Sonny (and wife Marie) Tomassetti, and Dominick (and wife Betty) Tomassetti. Visitation on Friday, September 10th, from 4-8PM at Park Funeral Chapel, 2175 Jericho Turnpike, Garden City Park, NY. Mass on Saturday, September 11th, 9:30AM at Notre Dame R.C. Parish, 45 Mayfair Road, New Hyde Park, NY. Interment at Mount St. Mary Cemetery in Flushing, NY, to forever be with her partner in life, her beloved Fred. *The family requests that visitors who are currently unvaccinated to please wear a mask and socially distance during the visitation and church service.
