Obituary of Robert E. McCarthy

Robert McCarthy passed away peacefully at his home in Garden City, New York on Friday, January 7, 2021, after an illness. He was born on June 18, 1930, in Brooklyn, New York, to the late Thomas and Helen Biggin McCarthy. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Joyce, and is survived by his children, Joyce Comerchero (Mike) and Bob McCarthy (Mary Jean), both of Garden City. He also leaves six grandchildren, Ellen (Chris), Bridget, Katherine (Dave), Michael, Barbara and Robert. He was predeceased by his brothers and sisters-in law Thomas (Bernadette), Edwin (Vivian) and Jay (Pat) and his brother-in-law Roy. He is survived by his sister Betty and brother Gene (Connie). He spent a lifetime committed to his family and faith and had a deep appreciation for his country. He greatly enjoyed spending time with his large extended family, gardening, reading, travelling, spending time at Malibu for many summers and Florida during many winters. He was a strong advocate of education and was a proud graduate of St John’s Prep (which he worked to put himself through)., Fordham University, Fordham Law School (J.D.) and NYU Law School (LL.M). He served with great pride as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army in Germany following the conclusion of World War II. He dedicated his career to CBS News spending more than 35 years there and retired as the Vice President for Business Affairs in 1995. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, served as a Trustee of the Village of East Rockaway and was active as a member of the Holy Name Society, Nocturnal Adoration Society and the Knights of Columbus. He will be dearly missed.
