Gertrude Swaschnig

Obituary of Gertrude Anna Swaschnig

She was born Gertrude Anna Schmittberger in Brooklyn, NY. Until her marriage, she worked as a shop attendant in May’s and Klein’s and as a secretary for a Venezuelan mining company and for Bradford Dying and Textiles. She was married to Edward Swaschnig for 70 years, until his death in 2017. In 1953, they made a home in Garden City Park, where they raised 3 children. When Edward became a minister for the New Apostolic Church, she labored beside him, supporting and aiding his work among various congregations. She sang in the choir, played the organ, and accompanied him when he had fellowship among other denominations. Gertrude was always thoughtful and kind. If she knew you, you could be guaranteed to receive a card on your special occasions, sometimes handwritten. She will be missed by many. She leaves behind 3 children: Linda (Larry), Raymond (Debrah), and Sandra, as well as 3 grandchildren: Laura (Jimmy), David, and Steven, and two great grandchildren: Lillian and Joshua, as well as many friends.
