Obituary of Varghese Mathew

 

Varghese Mathew (Raju), beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2024 at the age of 81. He was born on September 3, 1942, in Kozhencherry, Kerala, India, the youngest of eight siblings.

Raju’s life was a testament to his unwavering dedication to his family, his community, and his passions. As a youth Sunday school teacher, he imparted wisdom and faith to countless individuals. His love for sports, particularly basketball, football, and wrestling brought joy to his life, and he shared that joy with all who knew him. Driven by his thirst for knowledge, Raju pursued a career as a mechanical design draftsman. His professional journey led him from Bilai to Faridabad and New Delhi, where he met his wife, Jaini. They married in 1975 and together embarked on a new chapter in New Delhi before eventually settling in New York in 1982.

In Albertson New York, where he resided for 33 years, Raju’s green thumb was well-known, as he took great pleasure in gardening and meticulously maintaining his lawn. He extended his hobbies in car maintenance, home improvement, and gardening into a career of real estate where he befriended many a tenant.

A devoted family man, Raju cherished his role as a husband and father of three daughters. He fostered a close-knit family environment, always prioritizing love, understanding, and support. His endearing presence and gentle demeanor earned him the affectionate title of the "tall man with glasses and the mustache" amongst his neighbors and neighborhood.

Raju’s love for learning extended beyond his professional pursuits, as he avidly studied politics, history, geography, and engineering in his. Despite life's challenges, he approached each day with resilience and a light-hearted spirit. He maintained lifelong friendships around the world, staying connected with loved ones near and far.

Known for his quick wit, Raju had a knack for humor and teasing, bringing laughter to every gathering. Yet, when the situation called for it, he could be stoic and strict, guided by his deep sense of responsibility and integrity.

In his later years, Raju embraced the role of a devoted grandfather, relishing every moment spent with his grandchildren. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and enduring friendships that will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Raju is survived by his loving wife, Jaini, his three daughters Mercy, Elma, and Suzana, son in law Roshan, two grandchildren Aaron and Ava as well as his brother in law Sherry, sister in law Jolly, and nieces and nephews Nikhil, Leah, and Daniel. His memory will forever be cherished by his extended family and friends, near and far and he will be sorely missed.
