He was a nice guy who let me audit his class a few sessions to get an idea of architectural rendering from Plan. With the enormous body of work he always had on his desk I thought, that's not a portfolio. That's a hernia. Go ahead. Lift it! A very talented, decent man who didn't work at being funny, it just rolled off of him. I wasn't surprised he became tentpole at the Society of Illustrators. I know we all have an appointment with eternity, nevertheless I'm sorry to hear of his passing. I know those close to him will doubly feel that loss. We'll- the guy was something of a blessing to those who'd know him. People like that don't grow on trees.

Al. was one of the best teachers during the 5 years I was at ,Pratt. He was a kind and sympathetic teacher of a difficult skill and influenced my life with a love of drawing and a solid understanding of representation. I got encouragement and assistance from him even long after I had left Pratt, giving me the grid tools for a difficult perspective. Not long ago, I got an email from him that was a long overdue thank you for his contribution to my life. He was modest and grateful. I have a large freehand sketch of the Brooklyn Bridge he gave me as a wedding gift when I was up at the studio around 1976. I think about him every time I look at it. Lee.Wolfson

Al was one of the best, kindest and funniest people I’ve met. Always ready to lighten up the mood and always ready to listen and help. I met Al in Pratt, in 1981. Took his illustration course. He’d offered a job in his studio that very first class. That was such a good, fun time…. He was a great teacher, artist and a friend. Rest in Peace Al.
