Varkey Varghese

Obituary of Varkey P Varghese

Our most precious and loving father,

Varkey P. Varghese was born on October 14th, 1945 to the late Mr. and Mrs. Philipose & Kunjamma Varkey in Kollakadavu, Kerala.  As the youngest of four, he was lovingly known as Kunjukutty.

On July 9th, 1972, he married the love of his life, Kunjumol in Bombay, India.  Her endearing name for him was Kunjchacha.  In 1973, after being blessed with the birth of their first son, Benny, the family immigrated to the U.S. in 1975 and their first home was in Brooklyn, NY.  A few years later, they welcomed their son, Kurien (Blesson) and their daughter, Kunjamma (Blessy).  In 1982, the family moved from Brooklyn, NY to New Hyde Park, NY where they have lived for the last 42 years.

In India, Varkey began his career at the Kalyan Railway Hospital.  After immigrating to the U.S. he worked in Brooklyn and continued his career at Kings County Hospital Center for 33 dedicated years.

He was passionate about his personal relationship with Jesus and he dedicated his life to serving and ministering for Him.  His purpose in life was to serve in any possible capacity in church, hospitals and prisons.

He served at both the Church of God in Brooklyn and IPA/ Cornerstone Church in Hicksville.  During his time working at Kings County Hospital Center, he would use his lunch breaks to share the love of God around the neighborhood, handing out tracts and sharing his testimony everywhere he went.  He served as a chaplain in hospitals and would minister to the hopeless and brokenhearted.  He also faithfully served at the Prison Fellowship Ministry in Rikers Island for over 18 years, bringing hope and peace to those who were heavy burdened.  His sweet smile and genuine heart always encouraged and strengthened others during their difficult times.

He was a quiet man with a loud love for God and people.  His gentleness and silent courage was known to all who truly knew him.  Our father had the most precious childlike heart and his laughter continues to echo in our minds. His sweet smile warmed every heart and his joy was palpable to all.

Our precious father will be dearly missed by his children, Sunny, Benny, Blesson, Reema, James, and Blessy. He was also blessed to enjoy his four grandchildren, Kaiya, Kayden, Kareena, and Lucas.  Although our hearts grieve his loss, we find peace knowing that our precious parents have reunited and are rejoicing with Jesus in heaven.

One of his favorite verses to close…”Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord and who has made the Lord his hope and confidence.” Jeremiah 17:7.  In your eyes we’ve seen God’s love, in your words we’ve heard His wisdom, through your life we’ve found His grace.

Daddy, you will be deeply missed and are forever in our hearts. We all love you so much.
